Strike Right Balance For Better Future: Ensure Sustainable Tourism Development

Introduction:

With the tourism industry growing rapidly, it’s imperative that we economic benefits may be correlated with environmental conservation and social responsibility. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” Sustainable tourism development therefore  aims to preserve these natural wonders for future generations. Sustainable tourism development is now beyond the boundaries of “ buzzword “ and transformed to  much needed shift of  approach in Travel And Tourism.

According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), tourism is responsible for about 5% of global CO2 emissions, making sustainable practices are very  essential to reduce this impact. Protecting natural resources, reducing pollution, and promoting conservation efforts are to be considered actively towards Environmental Responsibility. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reported that tourism contributed $8.9 trillion to the global economy in 2019, highlighting its significant economic impact. Sustainable tourism development ensures that tourism activities provide long-term economic gains to local communities and bring Economic Viability. Supporting local businesses and creating job opportunities for natives is key to achieve this.  Sustainable tourism development can help protect cultural sites from degradation caused by over-tourism. This principle “Social and Cultural Respect” emphasizes the importance of preserving local cultures and traditions. It encourages tourists to engage respectfully with local communities and learn about their heritage.

Sustainable Tourism offers a plethora of benefits, spanning environmental, economic, and social realms. By minimizing the carbon footprint and promoting the preservation of biodiversity, sustainable tourism development helps protect natural landscapes and wildlife and benefits society and environment. According to  another UNWTO report ,sustainable practices could reduce tourism-related CO2 emissions by 5% annually. Further,according to the WTTC, In 2019, the tourism industry accounted for 10.4% of global GDP and provided 319 million jobs worldwide and boosted Economy. Tourism fosters economic growth by creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and encouraging sustainable business practices. Sustainable tourism development promotes cultural preservation, community development, and enhances the quality of life for local people and create a pool for society .Community-based tourism in countries like Thailand and Kenya have helped in improving  the living standards of local communities as well.

 Sustainable tourism development has to handle challenges  like Overtourism  . We are aware of the fact Popular destinations of Northern  India  like Shimla, Dehradoon  often struggle with the side effects of heavy rush visitors earlier  during weekends  and  now through out the year .This kind of  tourism is is resulting in  environmental degradation and straining  resources. Venice is another example where infrastructure and environment got overwhelmed and compromised due to heavy influx of  approximately 30 million tourists annually, and the state authorities had to take action in the form of imposing  tax. There is a myth that it will be a real challenge for any government to ensure economic growth without compromising sustainability.. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, destinations like Amsterdam and Barcelona have implemented measures to manage visitor numbers and taken right steps to mitigate the impacts of overtourism. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) provides guidelines and standards to help destinations and businesses implement sustainable practices effectively. Adequate infrastructure and resources are  absolutely essential to support sustainable practices, which can be a significant investment for future.

Governments can introduce policies and regulations that promote sustainable practices. International agreements can also play a significant role. For instance, the European Union has set ambitious targets to reduce tourism-related emissions as part of its Green Deal. Engaging local communities in tourism planning and development ensures that their needs and perspectives are considered. Studies show that community involvement can increase tourism's positive impact by up to 50%. Educating tourists and businesses with sustainable practices can bring significant change. Awareness campaigns highlight the importance of sustainability in tourism. According to a Booking.com survey, 70% of global travellers say they would be more likely to book eco-friendly accommodations.

Many  destinations and organizations have successfully implemented sustainable tourism development practices. Costa Rica with focus on conservation and sustainability is  known  for its eco-friendly tourism initiatives.  The country  has been  able to protect approximately 25% of its landmass through national parks and reserves which is an attraction    for millions of eco-caring tourists annually.   Attention is drawn to  visit  : Costa Rica - The Most Sustainable Destination in Central America.

New Zealand has set another example in the world of sustainability and  owned  the concept of "100% Pure New Zealand”. New Zealand's tourism plan has inbuilt stringent environmental standards and community engagement and yielded results  in the form of  15% increase in tourist satisfaction rates.

Bhutan’s approach to sustainable tourism development includes the concept of "high-value, low-impact tourism." Pacific island nation Palau has implemented Pledge system which requires that visitors to sign a pledge to act in an ecologically and culturally responsible manner. Undoubtedly , Sustainable tourism development is a critical path to ascertain preservation of beauty and resources of our planet for future generations, We can enjoy the benefits of tourism while protecting the environment and supporting local communities only by following sustainable practices.
